Marble, quartzite and soapstone are the surfaces nothing else reproduces. They are also the ones that ask something of you in return, and we would rather have that conversation before the slab is cut than after the first ring appears.

What each stone is really like

Marble is soft and reactive. Lemon juice and vinegar etch it — a dull mark in the polish, not a stain — and it will pick up patina wherever you actually cook. People who love marble love it for that. A honed finish hides etching far better than a polished one, which is the single most useful thing to know before you choose.

Quartzite looks like marble and behaves like granite: genuinely hard, heat-tolerant, and sealed rather than etched. If you want the look with less temperament, this is usually the answer.

Soapstone is soft to the touch, non-porous, unbothered by acid and heat, and darkens over time with mineral oil. It marks, and the marks become the surface's character rather than damage.

Laying out the veining

A veined slab is a single continuous picture, and cutting it into counters is a layout decision, not just a cutting list. We work out which part of the slab lands on the island, where the pattern breaks at a seam, and how the veining turns the corner on a mitred waterfall end so the movement carries down the side instead of stopping.

That layout is agreed with you, on the slab, before fabrication. Book-matched seams — where two adjacent pieces mirror each other — have to be planned this way from the start.

Sealing and living with it

We seal natural stone on installation and tell you honestly how often it wants redoing for the stone you chose. None of it needs a service contract. Cutting boards, trivets and wiping up the lemon juice covers most of the maintenance, and a honed finish plus a stone that is allowed to age gracefully covers the rest.

If that sounds like more attention than you want to give a kitchen, say so at the estimate — quartz gets you a marble look with none of the upkeep, and we will tell you which colours actually pull it off.

The installs other crews decline

Full-height slab behind a range, book-matched seams, waterfall ends with mitred veining, oversized islands that need a seam placed where nobody notices it — this is the work we take on. Template happens off the installed cabinets, our partner fabricators cut it, and our own crew sets it.

Start with a free in-home measurement and a written price. Finished natural stone from our jobs is on the projects pages if you want to see how it lives.
