Sintered surfaces — Dekton and the porcelain slabs in the same family — are made by compacting mineral powder under extreme pressure and heat. The result is denser than natural stone, non-porous, and effectively immune to the three things that ruin a countertop: heat, UV and scratches.

Where it is the obvious choice

Outdoors. An outdoor kitchen or bar is the case where quartz is simply the wrong material, because UV fades the resin. Sintered stone does not care. Sun, frost and rain leave it where it started.

Around real heat. A pan straight off the burner does not mark it. Around a range, a pizza oven or a grill, that matters more than any other property.

Thin profiles. Sintered slabs come thin, which lets you build a countertop that reads as a fine edge rather than a slab, and lets a waterfall end look sharp instead of chunky.

What to know before you choose it

It is hard, which cuts both ways: hard materials are brittle at edges and cutouts, so fabrication has to be right, and it is not a material to improvise around on site. The colour and pattern are printed through a surface layer on some products, so a squared-off edge shows a different look than the face — the mitred edge detail that hides this is a fabrication decision we make with you up front.

Cost sits above quartz for most colours. Where it earns that back is outdoors and around heat, where the alternative is replacing the wrong material in five years.

How we build it

Template off the installed cabinets, fabrication by our partner fabricators who work in this material regularly, installation by our own crew. Sink cutouts, mitred edges and any waterfall end are planned before the slab is cut, because in a sintered surface those are not adjustable afterwards.

Weighing it against the alternatives: quartz for indoor kitchens with no maintenance, granite for a natural slab that takes heat, and marble and natural stone when the look is the point. Tell us where the counter is going and how you use it, and the free written estimate will say which one we would put in our own house.
